To celebrate Earth Day, we thought yesterday would be a great day to wake up our garden! It was a gorgeous 60 degrees out yesterday- a much needed respite from all of the rain last week and the rain that is on its way back tonight. Jon and the boys built a new addition to our garden- a compost bin- from reclaimed pallet boards. We've never composted before and I've got to be honest, with my severe phobia of food poisoning- having a day's worth of rotting food on my kitchen counter top isn't exactly my idea of fun. But Jon promised he'd take it out every night so I'm trying to face my fears! In addition to getting our compost bin built and in place, we went through our raised beds to get all the weeds and such out. The boys thoroughly enjoyed transplanting worms from the raised beds into the compost bin- telling each one that they were going to live in a new home and that they'd like it very much! After a wonderful evening, our dirt was all "clean" and turned- ready for planting in the near future! I can't wait for the boys to have their little snack shack again :) Last year we would be outside for hours at a time and they'd just run to the garden for peppers, tomatoes, and green beans whenever they got hungry! Seeing those little boys with dirt on their hands while they stuff their faces with fresh vegetables that they planted, water, and took care of themselves is just about as awesome as life with little boys can get! HAPPY EARTH DAY!
