California Adventure- Days 16-19

I am seriously falling behind!  Just a few quick notes to catch up :)

Wednesday- Day 16
The boys and I drove down to Buena Park to see the Titanic exhibit.  It was really quite awesome.  The traveling exhibit was at the Henry Ford Museum just a mile from our house about two years ago, but it was just before the boys got into the Titanic so we didn't go see it at the time.  It took us about two hours to go through the entire exhibit and the boys were 100% focused the entire time.  Of course they danced circles around the people working there with their knowledge and a few times I tried to move them along as quietly as possible!  I couldn't believe how in tact some of the artifacts were and the boys loved seeing what the first and third class cabins and hallways actually looked like.  We even got to touch an iceberg and sit in a life boat while we watched the ship sink in front of us.  There was a small piece of the actual hull that we got to touch and the boys took three turns each- they were just amazed to be touching an actual piece of the Titanic.  Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take any photos or videos in the exhibit, but we did get to keep our boarding passes and we found out that Caleb and I survived while Matthew's person didn't- so he decided he wanted to be my husband instead so he could survive too!

The only picture I could get- outside of the actual exhibit

Caleb recreated the Titanic when we got home!

Thursday- Day 17
Thursday was a stay close to home and run errands kind of day.  They boys and I went to the local library and did some reading, then to the grocery store to stock up on food.  We made a big pot of chicken and dumpling soup for dinner and after we ate we went up to the Griffith Observatory.  The boys love it up there- they can run around on the grass, look out on the city, and we even waited in line to use the telescopes and got to see the moon :)

Friday- Day 18
Happy Fourth of July!  We were going to spend the day with some friends but after Jon's first week with students we decided we just needed a quiet day by ourselves.  We left right after breakfast to drive down to Rancho Palos Verdes.  Last time we were here we found this incredibly gorgeous beach that is public but no one seemed to really know about it because it is hidden.  You have to park at the Trump National golf course, walk through the course and then hike down the cliff.  Jon somehow found it two summers ago on some sea glass website!  We figured even if it was a little more crowded because of the holiday, it would still be pretty empty and relaxing compared to the main beaches.  Right when we pulled up we saw a pod of dolphins out in the water.  I ran ahead, walking briskly through the golf course parts and then running down the trail, but they were moving too quickly for me to catch up and get a really good look- rats!  But Jon and the boys caught up and we hiked down to the beach, which had a few people on it but was rather empty as we had expected.  It was the perfect beach to be at on the 4th.  The boys played in the sand, Jon met a lifeguard and they went looking for scorpions together, and we were all able to search for sea glass.  We even saw a seal who popped his head up a few times while swimming down the coast.  After four hours at the beach the boys fell asleep on the way home which was okay because we were hoping to let them stay up for fireworks.  After dinner and showers and some play time, we decided to attempt to get up to the Griffith Observatory.  It almost didn't happen because when we got there at 7:00pm, they had closed the road going up because the parking was full.  It was nearly a two mile hike up and after being in the sun all day there was just no way my heart was going to handle that- nor were the boys going to make it!  The park ranger told us they'd be opening the road up for a few cars once the top cleared out a little bit, so Jon made some small talk with the guy while we parked and 45 minutes later he let us be the first car up when it opened :)  It was crowded at the top, but we were able to get a spot on the roof at the ledge.  We sat the boys on the ledge (holding on for dear life!) and spent an hour watching firework shows all over Los Angeles.  At any given time, we could see a hundred fireworks at the same time!  It was strange looking down on them and some were as far away as the coast, but it was one of the coolest things I've ever seen!!  Unfortunately the few pictures we took didn't do it justice.  After a few attempts I just gave up- so sorry about that!

Matthew found a flower :)

Saturday- Day 19
Pancake Saturday!  Jon even bought a squirt bottle so we could have our real Pancake Saturday instead of just regular Pancake Saturday!  The boys chose Titanic pancakes today and they were spectacular, as usual.  After breakfast we headed down to Marina Del Rey because my friend Monika's husband invited Jon to go our deep sea fishing.  Jon was super excited!  We met them down at the dock and saw daddy off.  Then the boys and I went to the little Fisherman's Village to hang out.  We tried to do lunch with our friends but little Morgan fell asleep in the car so that was a wash.  But the boys and I enjoyed the rest of the afternoon on our own.  We found the most adorable little shop right on the water and I ordered two of what could be the world's cutest sweatshirts for the boys' birthday.  The guy had to make them in their sizes so he's going to ship them back to Michigan for me when they are done... I am super excited and can't wait to post a picture when we get them!  The boys and I stopped for ice cream because we had nothing else to do and what better way is there to kill time by the water than eating ice cream?!  Although when I found out they had chocolate covered frozen bananas I may have been more excited than the boys :)  We played by the water- the boys found some bushes to play in (because that's normal) and I found a little seal hanging out by a fishing boat that was right next to the bushes, so we all spent a little time there before we had to head back to the dock to pick up daddy.  Jon caught a bunch of mackerel and had a great time being out on the water- so all in all it was a great day!!!

Kiddos sending the daddies off!

There they go...

Bye daddy!!!

Enjoying the marina...  there was a seal that kept popping up in this little slip :)
